La planète Mars fascine un public de plus en plus large ; certaines annonces, récentes, outre atlantique, laissent penser qu’un drapeau pourrait flotter sur Mars d’ici quatre ans.
«Mars and the Earthlings » commence par exposer, de façon accessible, ce que nous savons de la planète Mars et recense en détail ce qu’ont apporté les missions robotiques. Il présente ensuite de façon réaliste l’ensemble des défis posés par les missions martiennes habitées et examine les différents scénarios d’exploration et de colonisation de Mars, tant sous leurs aspects scientifiques et techniques, que sociaux, médicaux, économiques, éthiques et politiques.
Les auteurs s’attaquent aux approximations, aux idées fausses et aux informations volontairement inexactes, qui doivent être rectifiées pour deux raisons principales : premièrement, ne pas se priver des bénéfices que la poursuite de l’exploration de Mars apportera, notamment en découvertes scientifiques majeures ; deuxièmement, combattre la dangereuse illusion que l’humanité pourrait être transférée sur Mars si la Terre devenait inhabitable à court ou moyen terme.
«Mars and the Earthlings » a été écrit par un groupe de soixante experts européens de renommée internationale, issus de domaines aussi divers que la planétologie, la géologie, la biologie, la médecine, la philosophie, le droit ou l’économie, ainsi que des astronautes et des auteurs de science-fiction. Pendant deux ans, le groupe a envisagé et discuté les divers types de missions martiennes possibles, qu’il s’agisse de missions habitées à court ou moyen terme, d’implantations de longues durées, à grande échelle, ou même de la faisabilité de la terraformation. Les auteurs ont analysé chacun des scénarios à partir des connaissances les plus récentes de leur domaine d’expertise. Ils présentent, dans ce livre, ce qui est faisable et discutent ce qui apparaît souhaitable.
«Mars and the Earthlings » fournira aux chercheurs des éléments objectifs d’analyse basés sur les résultats scientifiques les plus récents, aux décideurs politiques une référence pour prendre des décisions en connaissance de cause et au grand public un outil pour se forger une opinion éclairée.

The planet Mars fascinates an ever-widening audience, and recent announcements across the Atlantic suggest that a flag could be flying on Mars within the next four years.
‘Mars and the Earthlings’ begins by setting out, in an accessible way, what we know about the planet Mars and details what robotic missions have achieved. It then presents a realistic overview of the challenges posed by crewed Mars missions and examines the various scenarios for exploring and colonising Mars, from the scientific and technical standpoint as well as from the social, medical, economic, ethical and political standpoints.
The authors tackle the approximations, misconceptions and deliberately inaccurate information that need to be rectified for two main reasons: firstly, so as not to miss out on the benefits that further exploration of Mars will bring, particularly in terms of major scientific discoveries; secondly, to combat the dangerous illusion that humanity could be transferred to Mars if the Earth became uninhabitable in the short or medium term.
‘Mars and the Earthlings’ was written by a group of sixty internationally renowned European experts from fields as diverse as planetology, geology, biology, medicine, philosophy, law and economics, as well as astronauts and science fiction writers. For two years, the group considered and discussed the various types of possible Martian mission, from short- and medium-term crewed missions to large-scale, long-term settlements and even the feasibility of terraforming. The authors have analysed each scenario on the basis of the most recent knowledge in their field of expertise. In this book, they present what is feasible and discuss what appears desirable.
‘Mars and the Earthlings’ will provide researchers with objective elements of analysis based on the most recent scientific findings, political decision-makers with a reference for making informed decisions and the general public with a tool for forming an informed opinion.
